Egyptian Maus

Egyptian Maus

The very origins of our domestic cats are found in this spotted but fully domestic cat.  These are the domestic cats found in the tombs in Egypt. Believed to be the domesticated descendants of African Wildcats, they were nearly lost as a breed until several cats were brought back from Egypt in the 1950’s.  These cats were the basis of the current breed.

Renowned for their loyal dog-like behaviors, these cats are naturally spotted and occur in silver, bronze, smoke, black, and blue/pewter with a distinctive spot pattern. Black and blue/pewter are not eligible for show but are acceptable for breeding and registration. Eyes are “Gooseberry green” and have a distinctive “M” pattern on their forehead.  Their voices are melodic, almost a ringing sound.  They are extremely docile and outgoing with strangers in general.

Mau owners are as loyal as their cats, many saying that they would have no other breed. Maus make excellent pets and perfect outcrosses for hybrids since they offer a very docile, outgoing, and cuddly disposition sometimes lacking in wildcat hybrids.

Our Maus are offered as pets or breeders for both Mau breeding and Hybrid outcrosses. All our Maus are registered with TICA and CFA. If hybrid spots are too much for your pocketbook or lifestyle or if you live in a locale where hybrids have been banned you may wish to consider a Mau.
